Balancing the Scales: Women Entrepreneurs and Family Life in October
As a mom of three daughters, ages ten, six, and one, and a new entrepreneur (10 months in the momtrepreneur game), I've found myself navigating a unique set of challenges and rewards. This month, Women's Small Business Month, provides a perfect opportunity to reflect on the journey of balancing business and family life, and to celebrate the incredible women who are making a difference in our communities.
The Balancing Act
Being a mother is incredibly fulfilling, but I’m not afraid to say, it's also demanding. Adding the responsibilities of running a business to the mix can feel overwhelming at times (a lot of times). I've learned that finding a balance between my work and family life is essential to my overall well-being and success.
One of the biggest challenges I've faced is managing my time effectively. I homeschool my two oldest daughters (fourth grade & kindergarten), so there are always school responsibilities, extra-curricular activities, and household chores that need attention. I've had to create (and enforce - that’s the hard part) a homeschooling schedule that works for both my children and my business. I've found that having a routine and a dedicated workspace for homeschooling and my business has helped to create a sense of structure and productivity.
Another challenge has been overcoming feelings of guilt. As a working mother, I sometimes worry that I'm not spending enough playtime with my children, because we have to get all “the things” done. Am I alone in this? I hope not - please say I’m not. However, I've come to realize that my entrepreneurial journey is also a valuable lesson for my daughters. They see me working hard, pursuing my dreams, and making a positive impact on the world.

The Importance of Family Involvement
One of the most effective strategies I've found for balancing business and family is to involve my family in every part of the business that they're interested in doing with me. My husband and two oldest daughters are integral parts of my entrepreneurial journey.
My husband has been incredibly supportive of my business venture. He's helped me with everything from marketing and sales to product development. He's also been my go-to sounding board for new ideas, and a source of encouragement when I've faced challenges.
My two oldest daughters are also actively involved in the business, especially our mission, Stitches of Dignity. They love to help with packaging and shipping orders. They've also been involved in brainstorming new product ideas and designing marketing materials. Some of their ideas make it to production, while others…well, we’ll revisit those at a later date, if you know what I mean.

Involving my family in the business has been incredibly rewarding. It has strengthened our bonds, created shared experiences, and taught my daughters valuable skills. It has also helped me to stay grounded and focused on what's truly important in life.
Supporting Women-Owned Businesses
Supporting women-owned businesses is essential for fostering economic growth, empowering women entrepreneurs, and creating a more equitable and inclusive economy. As a mother, I believe it's important to support other women who are balancing the demands of family and business.
Here are some ways you can support women-owned businesses:
Shop local: Patronize women-owned businesses in your community. By choosing to buy from local businesses, you not only support the economy but also contribute to creating a vibrant and thriving community.
Network and connect: Attend events and workshops designed to connect women entrepreneurs with each other. Building relationships with other women in business can provide valuable support, mentorship, and opportunities for collaboration.
Mentorship: Offer mentorship or guidance to aspiring women entrepreneurs. Sharing your knowledge, experience, and advice can help them navigate the challenges of starting and running a business.
Invest in women-led businesses: Consider investing in or supporting women-owned businesses through crowdfunding, angel investing, or other means. Your financial support can help these businesses grow and expand their operations.
Advocate for women entrepreneurs: Use your voice to advocate for policies and initiatives that support women-owned businesses. This can include writing to your elected officials, supporting relevant organizations, and raising awareness about the challenges and opportunities facing women entrepreneurs.
By supporting women-owned businesses, you are not only helping to create a more equitable and inclusive economy but also contributing to the success and well-being of countless women entrepreneurs. When we support each other, we can achieve great things.
Celebrating Women's Entrepreneurship
Women's Small Business Month is a time to honor the achievements of women entrepreneurs and inspire future generations of female business leaders. By recognizing the contributions of women-owned businesses, we can create a more just and inclusive economy.
Let's continue to support and empower women entrepreneurs, and celebrate their remarkable accomplishments. The work of women-owned businesses is essential to the vitality of our communities and the overall health of our economy. By supporting these businesses, we are not only helping to create jobs and stimulate economic growth, but we are also fostering a culture of innovation, creativity, and resilience.
Furthermore, women-owned businesses are often more likely to invest in their communities, supporting local causes and creating a positive social impact. This is particularly important in today's world, where there is a growing need for businesses that prioritize social responsibility and sustainability.
By celebrating Women's Small Business Month, we can raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities facing women entrepreneurs, and inspire others to pursue their own entrepreneurial dreams. Let's work together to create a world where women have the same opportunities as men to start and grow successful businesses.
